NEW SCHOOL FREE PRESS

A SELECTION OF WORKS THAT I DESIGNED IN MY ROLE AS A DESIGNER AT THE NEW SCHOOL FREE PRESS

Background

Aside from helping design monthly print issues, I also assist the editorial staff in finding ways to integrate design into the publication's production––whether it be creating a system for better workflow or creating strategic environmental print graphics, such as event backdrops and poster installations. My role often involves challenging how a particular medium might strengthen a message and vice versa.

Launch Party Event Banner

Amidst the redesign of the publication's brand identity as well as the first print issue release of the Fall 2018 semester, I designed an event banner for the launch party.

Since it was the first time that we debuted our new logo, I developed a banner consisting of multiple overlapping copies of the logo in different colorways in order to emphasize the "loudness" and striking quality of our logo and brand colors. The effect of this was an eye-catching, high contrast banner which doubled as a photographic backdrop for guests to take photos in front of and spread word about the issue's release.

Special Print Issue Installation

To accompany a news story about the new dean of Parsons School of Design that was published on the New School Free Press's website as well as extend the reach of our news coverage, I was tasked with designing a special print issue of the "Parsons Announces a New Executive Dean" story.

The poster had to adhere to the following constraints: 1) a rapid 1-2 day turnaround, 2) printed using the facilities and resources accessible on campus, and 3) explore more sustainable (reliable) methods of producing rapid, cost-effective print materials given limited resources.

The result was a "poster installation" consisting of 9 8.5x11" sheets of paper––each of which featured a part of the original web story on the back. The poster installations were placed in various locations of three different New School buildings and garnered about 200-300 direct referrals from a QR code placed on the poster.

A prior iteration of the poster installation's back, which involved a playful composition of the story components, was abandoned as it distracted from the overall message of the print issue.

Race on Campus Digital Flyer

Following the protest of an event for "white-identified students," hosted by The New School's Student Health Services, the New School Free Press sought out to organize and facilitate a live event where campus race relations would be discussed. To promote the event on social media, I developed a series of ideation designs for a digital flyer.

Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to speakers of various student groups opting out of the discussion.
